British prisons: Five major incidents in 12 months



Unrest at HMP Swaleside on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent is the latest violent incident in British prisons.

Here are some of the incidents reported in the past 12 months.

December 16 - HMP Birmingham
Hundreds of prisoners rioted, setting fires, stealing keys and trashing some areas over 12 hours. Prisoners tweeted photographs of themselves wearing guards' helmets and dangling bunches of keys.

November 6 - HMP Bedford
Up to 200 inmates rioted at the category B prison. Scenes were also posted on social media.

October 29 - HMP Lewes
Several hours of unrest involving a small number of inmates in one wing.

October 18 - HMP Pentonville
Prisoner Jamal Mahmoud was killed in a stabbing attack. Two other inmates were injured.

December 11, 2015 - HMP Leicester
A small group of prisoners held a stand-off with guards after breaking out of a segregation unit.
